Once everything was so out of the closet the guys in theatre don't even try to be masculine anymore and I think it just kills the suspension of disbelief in most musicals. They're about boy meets girl, but most of the time the boy is an obvious flamer, and you could probably go on his instagram and find a photo of him at the pumpkin patch with his top boyfriend and I don't think most women can get into like they used to. Also the entire set design and acting has embraced gay camp which just makes the plays look so much tackier and cheap than they did in the past. It was just better when this stuff was an understated aspect that people could safely ignore if they wanted to. They've lean to hard into celebrating their own gayness and it's segregated musicals from mainstream society unlike the way it was in the past.
